No, in that very interview, Lee Atwater says quite clearly that there *used* to be a racist southern strategy in the 1960s but then claims they didn't use it in the 1980 campaign.

First of all, yes, the Democratic Party *was* the party of slavery and segregation for most of the 19th century and the early 20th century. And yes, the Republican Party in Lincoln's era was the party of civil rights! Excellent textbook. Study it and then don't ever let a republican claim some racial high ground again. -dbciii

The head of the Republican National Committee, who went down to Birmingham in 1952 to make the case that the Dixiecrats had a natural home in the GOP and should switch. You know who else? ME! . I was a young adult during Watergate hearings and was fairly well aware of what was going on. I remember when the articles were being teed up. What I don't recall is how much the early hearings were being sold as a run up to impeachment.

It's not that the president is doing something wrong, questionable, illegal even. That sounds like one of the first 43 to hold the office is doing something extraordinary, like Nixon, Grant, Reagan, Harding, A. Johnson. No, the context is a lawless mobster is occupying the presidency.

Every major civil rights law of the 1960s -- the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act -- was introduced by Democrats in Congress, passed by a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate and signed into law by a Democratic president.
